Dear Mr. Patterson and Rev: Anthony

I was recently given your names by George Goodrich.
He was suggesting I contact you about any possibilities for a Youth Summer Mission Trip in your area.

My name is Beth Keys and I am the Director of Youth and Children’s Ministry at the Presbyterian Church of Laurelhurst in Portland, Oregon. PCL is a small urban church that has been taking our youth on Summer Mission Trips for the last 20 years. For the second year we will be making this trip in conjunction with Aurora Presbyterian Church, a small semi-rural church about 30 miles south of Portland. I am now in search of our work site for summer 2008.

Would there be a work project or a community program in your Presbytery that might be in need of help from a group of youth – middle school and senior high age – and their chaperones for a week this summer? We have scheduled this year's trip for July 26 through August 3 including travel. We have served churches and communities throughout the west, from Central California to British Columbia, from the Pacific coast to western Montana, Nevada and New Mexico. Two years ago we took our group to the Katrina ravaged Mississippi Gulf Coast where we worked on homes and a church in various stages of reconstruction.  We are used to sleeping on the floor at a church and preparing all our own meals.

This year we are interested in serving a church or community similarly in need of our help but a bit closer to home. The youth wish to do manual labor type work that might include painting projects, minor repair work, demolition, or yard work.

I would really appreciate knowing of any projects, communities or congregations that you think we might serve. What would the specific project be and where would it be located.I make a number of contacts to gather project possibilities and then allow the youth to choose the one for which they feel they are most needed and best suited.  I hope to present the possibilities from which they may choose at a gathering of the youth from both churches on March 9.

Conference Objectives

To look at the times in
men’s lives when they
need to learn to forgive
themselves and others;

Times that challenge men to
show grace and forgiveness
to those who are offensive;

Times when someone asks
for and deserves our
forgiveness;

Times when someone
does not know that they
have offended and needs
our forgiveness;

Times when someone
offends us and does
not want our forgiveness;

To show how barriers
between you and others
are also barriers between
you and God’s love and grace.
